| Study: Indoor basketball and myopia study | |
| Principal Investigator: David Mackey, Lions Eye Institute | |
We are inviting you to participate in this study investigating how much time children and adolescents who play basketball spend outdoors, and how this may relate to a need to wear glasses to see clearly in the distance (short-sightedness or myopia).
Please take time to read the following information carefully. If some areas are not clear to you or if you would like more information, ask us any questions before you sign the consent form.
The project has been approved by the University of Western Australia Ethics Committee (2026/ET000265)
What this study is about:
Short-sightedness (myopia) most commonly develops between childhood and early adulthood and can continue to worsen until adulthood. Studies in Australia and internationally have shown that spending low amounts of time outdoors is one of the major factors that can lead to the development of myopia in children and adolescents.
Organised sports are a great way to increase physical activity in children and teenagers and have many associated benefits. For sports that are played outside, this could include increasing the amount of time participants spend outdoors. However, not all sports are played outside. We are interested in finding out whether participating in a typical indoor sport, like basketball, changes the overall amount of time that children and teenagers spend outside. We then want to link this to whether children and teenagers who play basketball also wear glasses for short-sightedness.
The results of this study will help us develop recommendations for time outdoors for children playing different sports.
Goals of the study
- Assess current level of time spent outdoors and indoors in children and adolescents playing basketball
- Assess levels of myopia present in children and adolescents playing basketball
Who will take part in this Study?
We are inviting parents of children and adolescents aged under 18 who are of members of select basketball clubs in Perth to participate.
What will the study involve?
We will ask you to complete a short online survey. We will ask you to report:
- Your child's age and biological gender
- Whether your child needs glasses
- Whether you wear glasses (short-sightedness can run in families)
- How long your child spends outdoors
The survey will take 5-10 minutes to complete.
We will not collect any identifying information, such as names or contact details, about you or your child.
Participation in any research project is voluntary. If you do not wish to take part you are not obliged to.
What are the possible benefits of taking part?
There are no direct benefits, however your involvement will help us understand the intersection between sports, outdoor time and myopia.
Where and how long will my data be stored?
As outlined in the WA Universities Sector Disposal Authority guidelines, we will store your data for at least 7 years, or until the youngest participant turns 25 years, whichever is later.
What are the possible side effects, risks and discomforts of taking part?
There are no side effects or harms involved in this study. There is a small risk of unauthorised access to your data, but data will be anonymous so you and your child will not be able to be identified.
How will my privacy be maintained?
This study will not collect any identifying information about you or your child.
All information collected with be anonymised (your survey will be assigned a study ID) and all information collected will be kept private and confidential. It will be stored securely on Lions Eye Institute servers and password secure systems. Only authorised persons will have access to it.
If you give us your permission by completing consent, we plan to publish the results in international scientific journals. These results will be summaries of all responses and we will not publish any data that contain identifying features. At the conclusion of the study we will forward a general newsletter updating all participants with the findings and significant outcomes.
Interested in participating?
If you would like to participate in this study simply complete the consent form on the next screen. Then you will be taken to the survey questions.
